Cervical Cancer: A Silent Killer

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that affects the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a common sexually transmitted infection. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, and the second most common cancer among women in India. It is estimated that more than 97,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in India, and more than 60,000 die from it.

Cervical cancer is often called a silent killer because it does not show any symptoms in the early stages. Some of the possible signs and symptoms of cervical cancer are:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding, such as after sex, between periods, or after menopause
  • Unusual vaginal discharge, which may be foul-smelling, watery, or bloody
  • Pain during sex or pelvic pain
  • Difficulty in urinating or bowel movements
  • Weight loss, fatigue, or loss of appetite

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. Cervical cancer can be prevented and treated if detected early. Some of the ways to prevent and detect cervical cancer are:

  • Getting vaccinated against HPV, which is recommended for girls and boys between the ages of 9 and 15
  • Getting regular Pap tests, which are screening tests that can detect abnormal cells in the cervix before they become cancerous
  • Practicing safe sex, such as using condoms and limiting the number of sexual partners
  • Quitting smoking, which can increase the risk of cervical cancer
  • Leading a healthy lifestyle, such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and managing stress.
