A Musical Genius and a Gentle Soul
Jim Beard was born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, on August 26, 1960. He started taking music lessons at a young age, learning clarinet, saxophone, and string bass. He studied jazz at Indiana University, where he played in a bar band with future stars such as drummer Kenny Aronoff and trumpet player Chris Botti.
He moved to New York in 1985 to pursue his musical career and soon became a sought-after composer, producer, and session musician. He worked with a wide range of artists in various genres, from jazz legends such as Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, and Michael Brecker, to pop icons such as Dizzy Gillespie, Al Jarreau, David Sanborn, and Dianne Reeves. He also collaborated with rock guitar virtuoso Steve Vai and funk singer Meshell Ndegeocello, among others.
He published more than 100 compositions, many of which were featured on recordings by other musicians and in books such as The New Real Book. He also performed with orchestras such as the Metropole Orkest, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He composed music for TV and movie scores, as well as for video games and commercials.
He recorded six solo albums, showcasing his skills as a pianist, keyboardist, and composer. His productions and compositions were nominated for seven Grammy awards, and he won one in 2007 for his performance on Some Skunk Funk by Randy and Michael Brecker.
He joined Steely Dan as a touring keyboardist in 2008 and became a vital part of the band’s live sound. He played on the band’s Think Fast Tour, Mood Swings Tour, Rockabye Gollie Angel Tour, and The Summer of Living Dangerously Tour. He also toured with the Eagles on their Long Goodbye Tour. His last performance with Steely Dan was on January 20, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona.
