Dr. Malkit Singh Jandiala unveils his book on Gurmat Sangeet and performs at Tagore Theatre
The tricity of Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula witnessed a musical treat on January 18, 2024, as Dr Malkit Singh Jandiala, a renowned hindustani classical musician, performed at Tagore Theatre. The event, organized by Polo Hindustani Art Heritage and Cultural Trust in association with Pracheen Kala Kendra, attracted a large number of art and music lovers who enjoyed the sublime melodies and artistic brilliance of Dr Malkit Singh and his accompanying artists.
A stalwart of hindustani classical ragas
Dr Malkit Singh Jandiala is a stalwart of hindustani classical ragas, who has mastered the art of reciting ragas from the revered Shri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs. He has authored a book on Gurmat Sangeet, titled ‘Aadi Granth Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ka Raag Prabandh’, which was unveiled at the event by Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and Charan Singh Sapra, former Trustee of Hazur Sahib. Dr Malkit Singh has also received several awards and honors for his contributions to the field of music, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Shiromani Ragi Award, and the Punjab Rattan Award.

A captivating performance
Dr Malkit Singh’s performance was captivating and mesmerizing, as he recited various ragas from the Shri Guru Granth Sahib, such as Raag Asa, Raag Basant, Raag Bhairavi, and Raag Kalyan. He was accompanied by talented national and international artists, such as Ustad Akram Khan on tabla, Pandit Ramesh Mishra on sarangi, Ustad Harsh Narayan on sarod, and Ustad Dilshad Khan on sitar. The audience was spellbound by the harmony and synchronization of the vocal and instrumental music, which created a divine atmosphere. Dr Malkit Singh also explained the meaning and significance of the ragas and the verses from the Shri Guru Granth Sahib, which enhanced the understanding and appreciation of the audience.

The audience gave a positive response to the event, as they applauded and cheered for Dr Malkit Singh and his team. Many of them expressed their gratitude and admiration for the musical maestro, who took them on a melodic journey that transcended boundaries and resonated with the timeless essence of classical music. A recognition of the achievers
The event also recognized and honored some of the achievers in the field of music, who have made significant contributions to the art and culture of the country. They were presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honor. The awardees were:
- Gurmeet Singh Shant, Hajuri Ragi of Shri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar, who is a renowned exponent of Gurmat Sangeet and has performed at various national and international platforms.
- Dr Shobha Koser, Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee and senior Kathak guru, who is a pioneer of Kathak dance in the region and has trained thousands of students in her illustrious career.
- Dr Pankaj Mala Sharma, former Dean and Chairperson of PU, who is a distinguished scholar and academician in the field of music and has authored several books and research papers on musicology.
- Pandit Kale Ram Ji, a maestro of the Punjab Gharana, who is a virtuoso of tabla and has accompanied many eminent musicians and vocalists in his long and illustrious career.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Sajal Koser, Secretary of Pracheen Kala Kendra, who thanked the Chief Guest, the Guest of Honor, the awardees, the performers, the sponsors, the media partners, and the audience for making the event a grand success.
