Japanese Composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passes away at the age of 71

Ryuichi Sakamoto was a renowned Japanese musician, composer, and actor who passed away on March 28, 2023, at the age of 71. Ryuichi’s solo career began in the early 1980s, and he quickly established himself as a versatile and accomplished composer. In 1983, he composed the score for the film “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” which starred David Bowie and featured Sakamoto in a supporting role. The film’s haunting and evocative score earned Sakamoto widespread critical acclaim and introduced his music to a broader audience.

In 1987, Ryuichi Sakamoto won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on the film “The Last Emperor”. The film, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, told the story of Puyi, the last emperor of China. Sakamoto’s score blended traditional Chinese music with his unique electronic sound, creating a score that was both evocative and memorable.

Sakamoto’s success as a composer continued throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He composed scores for films such as “Little Buddha,” “Wild Palms,” and “The Revenant,” among others. He also continued to release solo albums and collaborate with other musicians, including David Sylvian, David Byrne, and Iggy Pop.
In 2014, Ryuichi was diagnosed with throat cancer, and he underwent treatment while continuing to work on music. Despite his health struggles, he remained active in the music world, releasing his 15th solo album in 2023.
