Versatile Actor Ray Stevenson Died at 58

Ray Stevenson, the Northern Irish actor who starred in films such as Thor, RRR, and Star Wars: Ahsoka, died on Sunday at the age of 58. He was reportedly hospitalized with a sudden illness while filming in Italy for the action movie Cassino in Ischia. His death was confirmed by his US-based publicist firm, Viewpoint, but no cause of death has been revealed.
Stevenson was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, in 1964. His family moved to England when he was eight years old. He attended the Bristol Old Vic theatre school and began his career in British television, appearing in shows like Band of Gold, Peak Practice, and Murphy’s Law. He made his film debut in 1998 in The Theory of Flight, opposite Helena Bonham Carter.
Stevenson’s breakthrough role came in 2005 when he played the charismatic and roguish Titus Pullo in the HBO series Rome. The historical drama showcased his range and charisma as an actor, as he portrayed a loyal soldier, a loyal friend, and a flawed human being. He won acclaim from critics and audiences alike for his performance and earned a Screen Actors Guild card at 44.
Stevenson went on to play a variety of roles in film and television, often portraying warriors or villains. He was Volstagg, one of the Warriors Three in the Thor trilogy; Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, in the 2008 Marvel film Punisher: War Zone; Marcus Eaton, the abusive father of Four in the Divergent series; and Firefly, a mercenary and arsonist in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
He also appeared in smaller films such as Kill the Irishman, where he played real-life mobster Danny Greene; Big Game, where he played the president of the United States; and Accident Man, where he played an assassin. He lent his voice to Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars as Gar Saxon, a Mandalorian warrior.

On television, Stevenson continued to impress with his versatility and presence. He was Blackbeard, the notorious pirate captain, in the Starz series Black Sails; Jack Swinburne, a naval commander, in the German series Das Boot; and Othere, a mysterious wanderer, in Vikings. He also had memorable guest roles in Dexter, where he played a Ukrainian mob boss; and The Musketeers, where he played an exiled general.
Stevenson’s last role was Baylan Skoll, a former Jedi who survived Order 66 by fleeing into the Unknown Regions. He was set to appear in the upcoming Star Wars live-action series Ahsoka, a spin-off of The Mandalorian starring Rosario Dawson as the fan-favorite character. The series is expected to premiere on Disney+ in August.
His co-stars and colleagues admired Stevenson for his professionalism and talent. James Purefoy, who played Mark Antony alongside him in Rome, described him as a “brilliant, gutsy, larger-than-life actor who filled every part he played right up to the brim”. SS Rajamouli, who directed him in RRR, said he was “shocked” by his death and called him “a wonderful person”. James Gunn, who directed him in Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2., said he was “a lovely guy” and “a great actor”.
Stevenson left behind a legacy of diverse and memorable roles that showcased his skill and charisma as an actor. He will be missed by his fans and friends around the world.
