Career and Achievements

Alakija started her career in 1974 as an executive secretary at Sijuade Enterprises, a Nigerian company. She then moved to the former First National Bank of Chicago, which later became FinBank, now acquired by First City Monument Bank, as the executive secretary to the managing director. She rose to become the head of the corporate affairs department of the International Merchant Bank of Nigeria, formerly First National Bank of Chicago.

In 1993, Alakija ventured into the oil industry by applying for an oil prospecting license (OPL) from the Nigerian government. She was granted the license to explore for oil on a 617,000-acre block, about 100 km offshore of Nigeria, in the Agbami Field. She set up her own company, Famfa Limited, to manage the oil block.

In 1996, she entered into a joint venture agreement with Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited, a subsidiary of Texaco, and transferred a 40 percent stake to Star Deep. Later, Petrobras, a Brazilian company, also joined as a partner.

The oil block turned out to be one of the most prolific in Nigeria, producing over 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day. However, Alakija faced a legal battle with the Nigerian government, which claimed a 50 percent stake in the block, leaving her with only 10 percent. She challenged the government’s decision in court and after a 12-year litigation, she won the case and regained her 60 percent stake in the block.

Alakija has also diversified her business interests into other sectors, such as real estate and printing. She is the vice chairman of Dayspring Property Development Company Limited, a real estate company with investments in different parts of the world, and the vice chairman of Digital Reality Print Limited, a company that specializes in digital large-format printing.
