It started with Formula One that canceled the Russian Grand Prix. And now you’ve got the international Judo Federation, also suspending Vladimir Putin who was the honorary president of the organization. The calls are only increasing with each passing day is to ban athletes from Russia and Belarus. And that’s why the big question is that the invasion that is taking place on Ukraine is beginning to hurt Russia itself.

The sanctions are coming all over. It’s not just for the banking world. It is not just Russia’s central bank being cut off from the SWIFT system. The idea is for the pressure to be mounted on all spheres of Russian life.

So if banking impacts the rich, it impacts the oligarchs who are close to President Putin, then sports, especially football is something that impacts every Russian. Russia is a sports-loving country. And if you cut off their teams from major Federation, if you cut off the teams from the World Cup, as it has been now, you know, the idea is for the ordinary Russian to put pressure on President Putin to try and stop the hostilities in Ukraine.

That is the idea. But we do know that Russia loves strong leaders. They right now are backing President Putin, though you had some people in Russia come out on the streets to protest this invasion. Largely Russians are used to hardships, they like strong leaders.

In the past, they have dealt with these sanctions. So they are prepared to deal with it now as well. And we do know that President Putin before going into this war and this is you know, this is not a military operation, as he’s been calling it. This is a war. This is an invasion. And before going into this war, he had war games, all of these things, the banking sanctions that would come, the aid to Ukraine that would come, and the ban all over that would come.

For him of course, he was at one point of time till six months ago hailed as the perfect representative for the JUDO world. He was the honorary president of the Judo Federation. He’s a black belt himself, but he’s been kicked out of there as well. Is it impacting his life? Possibly not. But the pressure is mounting from all over to stop the assault on Ukraine.
