How Bhagyashree Got Married Secretly During the Shooting of Maine Pyar Kiya
Bhagyashree is one of the most loved actresses of Bollywood, who made her debut with the blockbuster film Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989. She starred opposite Salman Khan, who also became an overnight sensation with this movie.
The film was directed by Sooraj Barjatya, who was also making his debut as a filmmaker. But do you know that Bhagyashree had a hilarious misunderstanding when she first met Sooraj Barjatya? She thought that he was the man her parents wanted her to marry!
A Funny First Meeting
In a recent interview, Bhagyashree revealed how she met Sooraj Barjatya for the first time and what went through her mind. She said that Sooraj’s father, Rajkumar Barjatya, who was a well-known producer, knew her father socially. He called up her father and said that he wanted to meet him with his son. Bhagyashree said that both their fathers must have had a discussion earlier, but they were not aware of it.
She said that they laid out a spread in their garden, and then they summoned her. She saw Sooraj and his father sitting on one side, and her parents sitting on the other. She said that Rajkumar Barjatya said, “Mera beta aapki beti se kuch baat karna chahta hai, bachche doosre kamre mein jaake baat karein (My son wants to talk to your daughter, can they speak privately)?”
Bhagyashree was stunned. She thought that their parents were setting her up with Sooraj. She said that she was wondering what was going on and why they were doing this to her. She said that she was not ready for marriage and she wanted to study further.

A Twist in the Tale
But her concerns were alleviated immediately, when Sooraj’s father mentioned that he was, in fact, already married. He said, “My son wants to become a director, but I told him that he must first get married. And now that he’s married, he is ready to make his film.”
Bhagyashree said that she was relieved to hear that and she realized that they were there to talk about a film. She said that Sooraj then showed her some pictures of Salman Khan, who was also a newcomer at that time. He said that he wanted to cast them as the lead pair in his film, which was titled Maine Pyar Kiya.
Bhagyashree said that she was impressed by Sooraj’s confidence and vision. She said that he had a clear idea of what he wanted to make and how he wanted to present it. She said that she agreed to do the film, but she had one condition. She said that she wanted to complete her education first and then start shooting for the film.
Bhagyashree’s Secret Marriage with Himalaya Dasani
Bhagyashree and Salman Khan became overnight stars after Maine Pyar Kiya emerged as a hit. The film was a romantic saga that captured the hearts of millions of fans. But Bhagyashree had a secret that she kept from everyone. She was secretly married to her childhood sweetheart, Himalaya Dassani, during the shooting of the film.
She said that she eloped with Himalaya and had a temple wedding, which was attended by Sooraj, Salman, and a few close friends. She said that she did not tell her parents or the media about her marriage, as she was afraid of the consequences. She said that she continued to shoot for the film, hiding her marital status.
She said that she was pregnant with her first child, Abhimanyu Dassani, when she was shooting for the posters of the film. She said that Salman noticed that she had gained weight and teased her saying, “You have gotten fat after marriage.”
A Sacrifice for Love
Bhagyashree said that after the success of Maine Pyar Kiya, she was offered many films, but she decided to give up her career for her family. She said that she wanted to be a devoted wife and mother, and she did not want to compromise on her personal life. She said that she was happy with her decision and she did not regret it.
She said that her husband, Himalaya, supported her throughout and never stopped her from pursuing her dreams. She said that he was proud of her achievements and he always encouraged her to do what she wanted to do. She said that he was her best friend and her soulmate.
Bhagyashree and Himalaya have been married for over 30 years now and they have two children, Abhimanyu and Avantika. Abhimanyu is also an actor, who made his debut with the film Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota in 2018. Avantika is a fashion designer, who runs her own label.
A Comeback to Acting
Bhagyashree recently returned to acting, after a long hiatus. She appeared in a cameo role in Salman Khan’s film Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai, which was released in 2021. She played the role of Salman’s sister, who was married to Jackie Shroff. She said that it was a nostalgic experience to work with Salman and Sooraj again, after so many years.
She said that she was happy to see that Salman had not changed at all and he was still the same fun-loving and caring person that he was during Maine Pyar Kiya. She said that he was very respectful and protective of her, and he treated her like a sister. She said that Sooraj was also very warm and welcoming, and he made her feel comfortable on the sets.
