Madame Web Box Office Collection Day 5: Madame Web is a 2024 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), following Venom (2018), Morbius (2020), and Kraven the Hunter (2022).

The film stars Dakota Johnson as Cassie Webb, a paramedic who discovers that she has a mysterious connection to three young women with spider-like abilities, and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, a ruthless scientist who wants to exploit them for his own gain. The film also features Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott in supporting roles.

Madame Web was directed by S. J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the screenplay with Claire Parker and the writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The film was intended to be a suspense thriller that depicts the titular character’s origin story in a standalone universe with an approach that was more grounded and gritty compared to many previously released superhero films.

However, the film received mostly negative reviews from critics and audiences, who criticized its convoluted plot, bland characters, poor dialogue, lack of humor, and wasted potential. The film also performed poorly at the box office, grossing only $51.9 million worldwide against a budget of $80 million, making it one of the biggest flops of 2024.

Plot Summary

The film begins in 1973 when a research team led by Ezekiel Sims and his pregnant partner Constance Webb discover an unidentified species of spider in the jungles of Peru with rare healing properties. Ezekiel betrays the team and claims the spider for himself before leaving Constance for dead. An indigenous tribe attempts to save Constance, but she dies shortly after giving birth to a girl whom she names Cassandra.

In 2003, Cassandra, going by “Cassie”, lives alone in Queens, New York, working as a paramedic alongside her co-workers Benjamin “Ben” Parker and O’Neil. While saving a driver from a car hanging off a bridge, Cassie falls into the water and has a near-death experience.

Ben revives her but she begins to experience visions of three young women in different locations: Jessica Drew, a British spy who was experimented on by Hydra; Cindy Moon, a Korean-American student who was bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker; and Anya Corazon, a Mexican-American teenager who was given spider-powers by a mystical cult called the Spider Society.

Cassie soon learns that she is the daughter of Constance Webb, who was the original Madame Web, a clairvoyant who could sense and communicate with other spider-powered individuals. Cassie inherits her mother’s abilities and decides to find the three women she saw in her visions, hoping to help them and learn more about her past. She is aided by Ben, who reveals that he is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and the uncle of Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man who died in a battle with the Sinister Six.

Meanwhile, Ezekiel Sims, who has become a wealthy and influential businessman, is also looking for the three women, as he believes that they hold the key to unlocking the secrets of the spider that he stole from Peru. He hires a team of mercenaries led by Kraven the Hunter, a notorious big-game hunter who has a personal vendetta against Spider-Man and his allies. Ezekiel also has a mole inside S.H.I.E.L.D., who informs him of Cassie’s existence and location.

Cassie manages to locate and contact Jessica, Cindy, and Anya and convinces them to join forces with her and Ben. They form a team called the Spider-Women and use their combined skills and powers to fight against Ezekiel’s forces. Along the way, they also encounter other spider-themed characters, such as Silk, Spider-Girl, Spider-Woman, and Spider-Gwen, who offer them assistance or advice. Cassie also develops a romantic relationship with Adam Scott, a journalist who covers the Spider-Women’s exploits.

The film culminates in a showdown between the Spider-Women and Ezekiel’s army at his secret laboratory, where he plans to extract the spider’s DNA from them and use it to create a serum that would grant him immortality and godlike powers.

The Spider-Women manage to infiltrate the facility and free the spider, which recognizes Cassie as its rightful owner and bonds with her. Cassie then uses her enhanced powers and the spider’s venom to defeat Ezekiel and destroy his lab. The Spider-Women escape and celebrate their victory, while Cassie decides to embrace her role as the new Madame Web and vows to protect and guide other spider-powered people around the world.
