On 4 June 1950, Dinesh was born in New Delhi to Hiralal Trivedi and Urmilaben Trivedi. His family originally hailed from Karachi, Pakistan, but moved to India during the Partition. He grew up as the youngest child in the family, spending his childhood in Shimla and Solan, where he studied in boarding schools.

He completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, in 1969. Later, he went abroad to pursue higher studies, earning an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1974.
