Career
Emma Thomas began her career as an unpaid intern at Working Title Films, before working as a runner and receptionist. She had a “very awkward” conversation with her father upon her graduation from university, in which he tried unsuccessfully to persuade her into working in civil service. She was later promoted to a production coordinator for Working Title Films.
The first film that she produced was the short feature Doodlebug (1997), which depicts a man anxiously trying to kill a bug-like creature in his flat. She and Nolan created the short film on 16mm film during their time at university. After plans to create a full-length feature with Larry Mahoney were scrapped, Emma produced her first feature Following (1998) with Nolan and Jeremy Theobald, who stars as an unemployed young writer who follows strangers in London in hopes of receiving material for his first novel, but is drawn into a criminal underworld where he fails to keep his distance.
The film was conceived on a production budget of around £3,000, and was filmed on weekends over the course of a year; with scenes being rehearsed extensively to preserve film stock.
Following was well received by critics and festivals, and caught the attention of Hollywood. Thomas and Nolan moved to Los Angeles in 1999, where they founded their production company Syncopy Inc. Their next film was Memento (2000), a psychological thriller based on a short story by Nolan’s brother Jonathan.
The film stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia who uses tattoos and Polaroid photos to track down his wife’s killer. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning Emma and Nolan their first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Thomas and Nolan continued to produce films that combined originality, complexity, and spectacle, such as Insomnia (2002), a remake of a Norwegian thriller starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams; The Prestige (2006), a period drama about rival magicians starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman; Inception (2010), a sci-fi heist film about a team of thieves who infiltrate people’s dreams starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page; and Interstellar (2014), a space epic about a group of astronauts who search for a new home for humanity starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.
Emma and Nolan also revived the Batman franchise with The Dark Knight Trilogy, consisting of Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). The trilogy starred Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and featured an ensemble cast of actors such as Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Tom Hardy, and Anne Hathaway.
The trilogy was widely praised for its dark, realistic, and grounded approach to the superhero genre, and became one of the most successful and influential film series of all time. The Dark Knight, in particular, was hailed as a masterpiece, and earned Thomas and Nolan their second Oscar nomination for Best Picture, as well as a posthumous Oscar for Ledger’s performance as the Joker.
Thomas and Nolan’s most recent film is Oppenheimer (2023), a biographical drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who led the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. The film stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. as General Leslie Groves, and Jennifer Lawrence as Kitty Oppenheimer.

The film was a critical and commercial phenomenon, grossing over $950 million worldwide and becoming the first R-rated film to cross the billion-dollar mark. The film also swept the awards season, winning seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor. Thomas and Nolan received their first Oscar for producing the film, as well as a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.
