According to reports, Suchandra had wrapped up her shooting for a TV serial and decided to use a bike-sharing app to ride home. She was wearing a helmet and sitting behind the biker when the accident happened. While she was near the Ghosh Paraa area in Baranagar, a cyclist suddenly appeared in front of the motorcycle, causing the biker to lose control. Suchandra fell off the bike and landed on the road, where she was run over by a 10-wheeler truck coming from the opposite direction. The helmet she was wearing was completely smashed by the impact of the truck. She died on the spot and was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead.
A shocked industry
The news of Suchandra’s death spread like wildfire and shocked the entire Bengali television industry. Many of her co-stars and colleagues expressed their grief and condolences on social media. They remembered her as a cheerful and hardworking person who had a bright future ahead of her. Her husband, Debjyoti Sengupta, said that she was extremely passionate about acting and had worked as a sidekick in many serials. He said that she dreamt of being an actress right from childhood and had to travel occasionally for work.
A public outcry
The accident also sparked anger and protests among the locals who demanded better traffic policing and road safety measures. They blamed the negligence of the authorities and the rash driving of the truck driver for Suchandra’s death. The police arrested the truck driver and seized the vehicle. They also assured that they would take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
