He was born on May 2, 1987, in Plum, Pennsylvania, and played college football at West Virginia University. He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft and played for them until 2016. He made two Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team during his NFL career. He retired from football in 2017 and became a media personality, hosting The Pat McAfee Show on YouTube and working as an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay.

Stephen A. Smith defends saying Pat McAfee isn’t ‘as polished’ because he’s white

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has defended his controversial remark that Pat McAfee, his fellow network host, is not “as polished politically” as him because he is white.

Smith made the comment during an appearance on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast in February, where he praised McAfee’s honesty and success, but also suggested that he had more leeway to be outspoken and unfiltered than Smith himself.

“I’m a black man on national television with a big mouth. I have to be careful about what I say and how I say it,” Smith said. “Pat McAfee is a white dude that can say whatever the hell he wants to say, and he’s going to get away with it. He’s not as polished politically as I am.”

Smith’s remark sparked a backlash from some fans and media members, who accused him of being racist and hypocritical. Some also pointed out that Smith and McAfee had a heated argument over a phone call recently, which reportedly led to Smith banning McAfee from appearing on his show “First Take”.

However, Smith clarified his statement on his podcast “Stephen A’s World” on Monday, saying that he was not trying to insult McAfee or diminish his achievements, but rather to highlight the different challenges and expectations that they face as sports media personalities.
