Stephen A. Smith defends saying Pat McAfee isn’t ‘as polished’ because he’s white

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has defended his controversial remark that Pat McAfee, his fellow network host, is not “as polished politically” as him because he is white.

Smith made the comment during an appearance on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast in February, where he praised McAfee’s honesty and success, but also suggested that he had more leeway to be outspoken and unfiltered than Smith himself.

“I’m a black man on national television with a big mouth. I have to be careful about what I say and how I say it,” Smith said. “Pat McAfee is a white dude that can say whatever the hell he wants to say, and he’s going to get away with it. He’s not as polished politically as I am.”

Smith’s remark sparked a backlash from some fans and media members, who accused him of being racist and hypocritical. Some also pointed out that Smith and McAfee had a heated argument over a phone call recently, which reportedly led to Smith banning McAfee from appearing on his show “First Take”.

However, Smith clarified his statement on his podcast “Stephen A’s World” on Monday, saying that he was not trying to insult McAfee or diminish his achievements, but rather to highlight the different challenges and expectations that they face as sports media personalities.

“I have nothing but love and respect for Pat McAfee. He’s a trailblazer, a winner, and a friend. He’s one of the best things that ever happened to ESPN,” Smith said. “But let’s be real. He and I are not in the same boat. He can say things that I can’t say. He can do things that I can’t do. He can get away with things that I can’t get away with. And that’s not because he’s white and I’m black. It’s because he’s Pat McAfee and I’m Stephen A. Smith.”

Smith explained that he and McAfee have different roles and responsibilities at ESPN, and that they cater to different audiences and platforms. He said that McAfee, who hosts his own show on SiriusXM and YouTube, has more freedom and flexibility to express his opinions and personality, while Smith, who is the face of ESPN’s flagship debate show “First Take”, has to adhere to more rules and standards.

“I’m not saying that Pat McAfee has it easy. He works hard and he deserves everything he has. But he also has more room to maneuver than I do. He can be more edgy, more provocative, more outrageous than I can. He can be more himself than I can. And that’s not a knock on him. That’s a compliment,” Smith said.

Smith also denied that he banned McAfee from “First Take”, saying that he welcomes him back anytime and that he looks forward to working with him on future projects. He said that their argument was over a creative difference and that it was blown out of proportion by the media.

“Pat McAfee and I are cool. We have no beef. We have no issue. We are on the same team. We are both winners. And we both help each other win,” Smith said. “So don’t believe the hype. Don’t believe the rumors. Don’t believe the nonsense. Pat McAfee is my kind of dude. And I’m his kind of dude. And we’re going to keep doing what we do best. And that’s entertaining the masses with our passion and our knowledge for sports.”
