Brunson, who was known as the “Godfather of Poker” and the “Texas Dolly”, was a trailblazer, a relentless opponent, and a master of the game. He won 10 World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournaments, including two Main Event titles in 1976 and 1977. He was also the first player to win $1 million in poker tournaments and accumulated more than $6 million in live tournament earnings.

Brunson was born in Longworth, Texas, on August 10, 1933. He was a talented basketball player at Hardin-Simmons University, but a knee injury ended his hopes of going professional. He then turned to poker, which he learned from his father, and started playing in illegal games across Texas with his friend Amarillo Slim.

In the 1950s, Brunson and his crew moved to Las Vegas, where he quickly became a mainstay of the high-stakes poker scene. He was one of the pioneers of Texas hold’em, which is now the most popular variant of poker in the world. He also helped create the World Poker Tour (WPT), which brought televised poker to millions of viewers.

Brunson was not only a great player, but also a great teacher and writer. He wrote the famous book “Super/System”, which is considered one of the first and best books on poker strategy. He later wrote a sequel, “Super/System 2”, and several other books on poker and his life. He also became an ambassador for poker, promoting the game and inspiring generations of players.
