Brunson was born in Longworth, Texas, on August 10, 1933. He was a talented basketball player at Hardin-Simmons University, but a knee injury ended his hopes of going professional. He then turned to poker, which he learned from his father, and started playing in illegal games across Texas with his friend Amarillo Slim.
In the 1950s, Brunson and his crew moved to Las Vegas, where he quickly became a mainstay of the high-stakes poker scene. He was one of the pioneers of Texas hold’em, which is now the most popular variant of poker in the world. He also helped create the World Poker Tour (WPT), which brought televised poker to millions of viewers.
Brunson was not only a great player, but also a great teacher and writer. He wrote the famous book “Super/System”, which is considered one of the first and best books on poker strategy. He was also a devout Christian, a loving husband to his wife Louise for 62 years, a father to his son Todd and daughter Pam, and a grandfather to several grandchildren.
Brunson retired from tournament poker in 2018, but he still played cash games until his final days. He was widely respected and admired by his peers and fans, who gave him standing ovations whenever he appeared at the WSOP. He was also known for his humor, generosity, and humility.
